Food rescue mapping

  • Survey to administer to food rescue partners
  • Kitchen reference, identifying where food donations are accepted
  • Community education material

The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a charitable organization, works to safeguard the Earth, its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends. Consistent with that mission, the NRDC administers the Food Matters Project. Initiatives within that project focus on reducing food waste.

The NRDC has contracted with ecoPreserve for a Food Matters initiative. A food rescue partner survey was administered in collaboration with the City of Orlando’s Zero Waste program. Findings were documented in a spreadsheet that lists essential information about each food rescue organization, including:

  • Contact details (names, locations, operating hours, and more)
  • Organization business model
  • Facts about food donation to and distribution by the organization
  • Materials accepted
  • Reporting policies and procedures

Based on that information, ecoPreserve compiled a reference document for use where food waste is produced. The team also designed educational content for training and everyday use, documenting tactics and resources for food rescue. The materials contain answers to questions about the potential value of food rescue and the environmental consequences of food waste.
